    Hello !

I know some of you love translations (in both languages...) I also know, (you wrote it to me ) that some of you have loved my stupid stories, since the end of December...
Well! I don't like routine, and this exercise will be a mix of different capacities...
    This exercise is a
The collective correction will be posted on Friday, February 6th. Changes made in blue, please... Have a wonderful time...

    I) Translate, using a modal auxiliary.
(2 or 3 different ways (but one modal only!).)
(2 different modals)

II) Put the sentences into direct speech. Don’t forget the introductory verbs.
    1) He told his sister that the preceding morning he had seen the tramp who had been following her since the week before.
    2) The policeman told us not to move and asked us where we lived. He also ordered us to take our IDs out for him and not to utter a single word.
    3) She told me that she’d take another job the following week if she didn’t like the one she had started the month before..
    4) He said he’d asked his boss whether he intended to give him a rise. The boss answered he did.

    III) Translate into French :
For those of you who don't want to work on 'versions', you may, if you prefer, sum up the 115 words into a little text of 30 ( + or - 5 words!) YOU MAY NOT USE more than 5 WORDS FROM THE TEXT (except for articles, prepositions, particles, etc)= Rephrasing the little text !

“By now she knew that what she held was no shell. Without looking at it she thrust it into the top of her swimming costume, between her breasts. She dried herself, dried her eyes that stung with salt, felt a raging thirst from the brine she had swallowed. No one had come to her aid, no one had walked down to the water's edge to ask if she was all right. Not even the beach butler. But he was here, now, beside her, smiling, carrying her Diet Coke and packet of crisps as if she had ordered them.
‘Ocean smacked you down? Too bad. I don't think you lose no jewels?’
    She shook her head....

    Hello !
    Merci beaucoup !

    I) Translate, using a modal auxiliary.
    1) She might (may) have tried to enter without being allowed to!
    2) You shouldn’t have forgotten to talk to her before. She may have allowed you to go inside…
    3) Shall we go hiking tomorrow ?
    4) This (bed)room must have been prepared for me, my things are already in there.
    5) They didn’t need to tell you what you had to do ; you knew it perfectly.

II) Put the sentences into direct speech. Don’t forget the introductory verbs.
    1) “Yesterday morning, I saw the tramp who has been following you since last week”, he told his sister
    2) The policeman told us : “Don’t move !”; then he asked us : “Where do you live?”. He also ordered “Take your IDs out for me and do not utter a single word”
    3) She told me : “I will take another job next week if I don’t like the one I have started last month”
    4) “I have asked my boss whether he intends to give me a raise”, he said. The boss answered “I do”.

    III) Translate into French :
For those of you who don't want to work on 'versions', you may, if you prefer, sum up the 115 words into a lttle text of 30 ( + or - 5 words!) YOU MAY NOT USE more than 5 WORDS FROM THE TEXT (except for articles, prepositions, particles, etc)= Rephrasing the little text !

    Elle secoua la tête

    Hello! 😃

    I forgot to specify ....
    1) You have to count the words of your summaries and write the number down. You must, of course, respect the requirements! = Compulsory for the Bac, and European exams...
    2) Insofar as the exercise is called 'modals' , please, I'd like as many 'modal auxiliaries' and as few words like 'permission' as possible !
A big smile to all of you !

    here is my "job" !

    1. She might have tried to enter without permission. It could be that she tried to enter without being allowed!
    2. You shouldn't have forgotten to tell her before. She might have given you the possibility to go inside.
    3. What about a walk tomorrow ? Would you like to go hiking tomorrow ? would you mind if we go for a walk tomorrow ?
    4. Someone should have prepared this bedroom for me, my belongings (or my things) are already there. Someone must have prepared this bedroom for me....
    5. They didn't have to tell you what you had to do, you perfectly knew. They didn't need to tell you what you had to do; you knew perfectly.

    6. "Yesterday morning, I have seen the tramp who has followed you for a week", he told (to his sister);
    7. The policeman said : "please, don't move, and tell me where you live ? "and then : "Give me your IDs and don't add any word more "! ( or shut up !)
    8. "I would take another job, the following week, if I didn't like the one I have started the last month", she said
    9. "I've asked my boss whether he had intended to give me a rise" (or not ! )and my boss answered "YES,I did". he told us.

    --------------------

ex : He told her he would come to fetch her there and asked if she prefered 10 or 11a.m.
=> He said to her : 'I'll come to fetch you here !'Then, he asked her : 'Do you prefer 10 or 11 a.m.?'

Hello Here4U , very interesting exercise, as usual En bleu mes modifications

    I.
    1. She might have tried to enter without being entitled to do so.
    2. You shouldn't have forgotten to talk to her about it before (or : to tell her first). You may have been allowed entry ...
3.Let's hike tomorrow, shall we ?
    Shall we hike tomorrow ?
Would you like to hike tomorrow ?
(without a modal: ) How about a hike (or : hiking) tomorrow ? Why not hike tomorrow?
    4. This room must have been tidied up for me, my belongings are (or : my stuff is) already there.
    5. They didn't need to tell you what you had to do ; you knew it perfectly, didn't you ? (or : You must have known it).

    II.
1.He said to his sister : "Yesterday morning, I saw the tramp who has been following you since last week"
2.The policeman said to us : "Don't move !" Then, he asked us : "Where do you live?". He also ordered : "Take your IDs out for me and don't utter a single word !"
3.She said to me : "I'll take another job next week if I don't like the one I started last month"
    4. He said he'd asked his boss : "Do you intend to give me a rise ?" And the boss answered : "I do"

    III.

III. She furtively slipped what she had collected in the sea between her cups. Although she almost died, nobody had come to help her, even the beach butler who was now making fun of her.

    Hello,
    I.
She might have tried to go inside without being allowed.
You should have not forgotten to talk to her before. She should have maybe allowed you to enter...
    Shall we hike tomorrow?
This room must have been prepared for me, my stuff are in it yet.
They had not to tell you what you had to do; you had knwon it perfectly.

    II.
He told his sister:" Yesterday morning I have seen the tramp who has been following you since last week."
The Policeman told us:" Do not move!" and asked us:" Where are you live?" He also ordered us:" Take you IDs out for me and do not utter a single word!"
She told me:" I will take another job next week if I don't like the one I have started last month."
He said:"I have asked my boss whether he intends to give me a rise." The boss answered:"I do"

    Hello,

    I – Translate using a modal auxiliary
    - She might have tried to come in without being invited
    - You should not have forgotten to talk to her beforehand. She might have allowed you to come in
    - We could go for a walk tomorrow ? Couldn’t we ?
    - This room must have been done for me, my things are already there
    - They did not need to tell you what you had to do. You perfectly knew it.

II – Put the sentences into direct speech
    - He told his sister ;”Yesterday morning I saw the tramp who has been following you since the week before
    - The policeman told us : “Don’t move” and he asked us ”Where do you live"? Then he ordered “Hand me your ID and keep quiet”
    - She told me “I’m going to take another job next week if I don’t like the one I started last month”
    - He said “I asked my boss whether he intended to give me a rise and he said he did”

    III – Translate

Thank you Here4u for this interesting exercise

    Dear here4u,
    Here is my try.

    Exercise 29.

    I) Translate, using a modal auxiliary.
It could be that she tried to enter without authorization/without being authorized/without permission !
You shouldn’t have forgotten to tell him before. She might have given you the authorization to enter
    3) Si nous faisions une randonnée demain ? (2 or 3 different ways (but one modal only!).)
What about if we would go for a hike tomorrow ?
Shall we go for a hike tomorrow ?
Could we go for a hike tomorrow?
What about of going for a hike tomorrow’ (without modal)
This room had to be prepared/must have been prepared for me. My personal belongings are already here.
(2 different modals)
They didn’t need what you had to do; you knew it perfectly.
II) Put the sentences into direct speech. Don’t forget the introductory verbs.
    1) He told his sister that the preceding morning he had seen the tramp who had been following her since the week before.
He tells to her sister he has seen the tramp, who has been following her since last week, yesterday morning.
    2) The policeman told us not to move and asked us where we lived. He also ordered us to take our IDs out for him and not to utter a single word.
The policeman tells us not to move and asks us where we live. He also orders us to take out our IDs for him and not utter a single word.
    3) She told me that she’d take another job the following week if she didn’t like the one she had started the month before..
She tells me that she would take another job next week if she shouldn’t like the one she has started last month.
    4) He said he’d asked his boss whether he intended to give him a rise. The boss answered he did.
He says: “I’ve asked my boss whether he intends to give me a rise. The boss answers he does.

Text rephrased in 35 words, of which 3 from the text:
Concealed what she found/held in her swimsuit, she got dried.
Nobody had helped her, including the lifeguard, who now was next to her, offering Coke and chips.
Asked if she had lost jewels, she denied.

And now my French version of the full text.

Thank you for the nice exercise, I enjoyed very much. I liked particularly the rephrasing of the little text.

    To the next one!
    Have a pleasant night.
    Joe

Thank you so much for this not that easy exercise...

    Réponse : Exercice 29 /Revenons à la variété de here4u, postée le 06-02-2015 à 23:30:02 (S | E)
    Hello

I'm feeling that, more than usual still ... it's going to take time to post this correction! I've just pasted it ... Come on ! with the colours and spaces ...

    I) Translate, using a modal auxiliary.
She might have tried to come in without being allowed to.

You shouldn't have forgotten to speak about it to her beforehand. She might have allowed you to (do it)...

(2 or 3 different ways .)
Shall we go for a trek tomorrow? ( shall modal de suggestion.)
What about going for a trek/hike tomorrow?
I suggest we go for a trek tomorrow !

Fancy going for a trek tomorrow?

This room must have been prepared for me; my stuff is/ my things are already there/in it.
'Elle a dû' signifie ' je suis quasiment sure qu'elle a été' = valeur de 'quasi certitude passée' => must have + participe passé

    5) Ils n’ont pas eu besoin de te dire ce que tu avais à faire. (2 different ways) valeur du modal = absence d'obligation
They didn't have to tell you what you had to do.
They didn't need to tell you what you had to do

II) Put the sentences into direct speech. Don’t forget the introductory verbs.
    1) He told his sister that the preceding morning he had seen a tramp who had been following her since the week before.
He said to his sister :"Yesterday morning, I saw a/the tramp who has been following you since last week."

'Yesterday morning' = discours direct => the preceding morning / the morning before = discours indirect.
Since the week before (= DI) => 'since last week' (DD)( il y a une durée qui se prolonge, donc, le temps ne peut pas être le prétérit, mais doit être le present perfect en - ing.

    2) The policeman told us not to move and asked us where we lived. He also ordered us to take our IDs out for him and not to utter a single word.
The policeman said : Don't move ! and asked :" Where do you live?" He ordered us: " Take your IDs out for me and don't utter a single word! "

3)She told me that she’d take another job the following week if she didn’t like the one she had started the month before..
She said to me: " I'll take another job next week if I don't like the one I started last month.'

    4) He said he’d asked the boss whether he intended to give him a rise. The boss answered he did.
He said : "I've asked the boss whether he intends to give me a rise." He answered: "Yes, I do !"

J'espère que vous avez remarqué les verbes introductifs : lorsque vous vous préparez à citer, vous pouvez utiliser : 'He said' ou 'he said to X :"... ' 'X asked : ' s'il s'agit d'une question. Toutes les variantes : ' he screamed' , 'he ordered ' , 'he whispered ' etc. sont possibles.

    III) Translate into French :

“By now she knew that what she held was no shell. Without looking at it she thrust it into the top of her swimming costume, between her breasts. She dried herself, dried her eyes that stung with salt, felt a raging thirst from the brine she had swallowed. No one had come to her aid, no one had walked down to the water's edge to ask if she was all right. Not even the beach butler. But he was here, now, beside her, smiling, carrying her Diet Coke and packet of crisps as if she had ordered them.
‘Ocean smacked you down? Too bad. I don't think you lose no jewels?’
    She shook her head...

    4) to thrust, I thrust, thrust : lancer, fourrer.
My head aches; she broke her leg and sprained her other ankle.
