    EX.81/Ready, steady… don't go yet !

    Hello, all of You!
Not all ready for a holiday yet… Exam results are not out, the weather is said to be terrible, and we’ve all got a lot on our minds…
Yet, I’ve decided to introduce a little bit of “play” in this exercise …

I can see some of you who are tearing their hair out, others are rubbing their hands… I know you will not remain indifferent in front of my new game of abascus…
In order to help you a little, here's a reminder of its rules and "method". I wouldn't like all of you to be bald and exasperated while playing.
    Lien internet

Yet, very few of you have told me what you wanted these holiday exercises to be: do you want to keep the 2 translations, or just one? If so, which one?
You will have games to increase your vocabulary, little texts with mistakes to correct, words to re-order to make correct sentences … Any (realisable) suggestion is welcome!

This N°81 is quite difficult… I warn you… It’s a and the correction will be online on Sunday, July 10th, very late as usual.
    Don’t be worried… Here’s
    THE FORCE …

    I. Translate into English:
    1. Pourquoi insister ? Tu peux, et tu dois me croire ! Un point c'est tout !

    II) Translate into French:
“Father: the magistrate, into whose courtroom I would sometimes slip during a trial, to crouch in a back seat, trying to relate to the stranger up there on the high bench, in his ample black gown, remote and stern, dispensing justice. However strange he seemed, I was proud, immensely proud. This is my father, I wanted everyone to know, this man who can listen to all these people and then decide, just like that, what is right, what wrong. He knows.»

    André Brink, Imaginary Sands, 1996.

III) ABACUS: Slide the abacus beads (letters) along the wires (lines) to form 11 related words (belonging to the same theme), reading down. (The beads are on wires, and CANNOT jump over one another!)
Work well! You’ll quickly realize this is no game!

If you find it too difficult, after 2 or 3 days, I'll give you the number of letters of the 11 words... but I'd rather not!

    1. --S---C--R---A---D-------------------------
    2. --T---T--L---E----U--I---------------------
    3. --C---A---U---H---C---N--------------------
    4. --G---H---R---E---T--D---R-----------------
    5. ---U---E---E----A---E----E-----------------
    6. ---F---W---T---R---O----R---C--------------
    7. ---E---R---I----S---R---S----T-------------
    8. ---I----A---I---A----S---T-----------------
    9. --G---N---I---N---L----U------------------
    10. ---H---G---N---E----D---O-----------------
    11. --T---S---S---Y---R-----------------------
    CERTIFIED WITHOUT ANY MISTAKES;
(You mustn't add any letters, or leave any out!) L'un des "mots" (le 3e) est en deux mots !

Double dose of the FORCE here! Go fo it!

    Good morning again, dear here4u!

The 81th is a great job, indeed,
    But, please,
Be so kind to tell us,
The theme of the Abacus, at least,
In order to make us a little bit relieved,
    From the hellish pain,
    Of that ordeal.

Hoping in your gracious lenience, I remain, thanking,
    with nice regards.
    Joe39

    Hello !

    Good morning, dear Here4u !

    I) Translate into English:
    1) Pourquoi insister ? Tu peux, et tu dois me croire ! Un point c'est tout !
Why do you keep on? If I tell you I won't buy you that violent toy, I'll never buy it. You can and must believe me! That's it!

What kind of hold has he got over you? You're looking so obedient and submissive that it seems as if he's blackmailing you/ that he might be blackmailing you, mightn't he?

She must be so implicated that she can see no way of solving this dilemma, what finally is bringing her down

Until she knew the dreadful news, she'd promised to help her. But since then, she's changed dramatically.

The promises are said to be broken, but I've been the same as ever and don't see why we should go our separate ways at this very moment.

Thank you for all, Here4u, and enjoy this weekend!

I think I'll skip the abacus this time (unless I change my mind : in that case, I'll send you a message) I'll concentrate on the next one

She must be so much involved that she can see no way out of this dilemma and that ultimately it has been destroying her.

    Hello Here4u

    Translate into English
1 – Why do you keep on insisting ? If I tell you I won’t buy you such a violent toy I never will. You can and you must believe me ! Full stop !
2 – What kind of influence does he carry with you ? You are so obedient and docile one could think he is blackmailing you
3 – She seems to be so involved that she can’t see any solution to this dilemma and in the end that breaks her down
4 – Until she heard of the terrible news, she promised to help her. But since then she has completely changed her mind
5 – Promises are bound to be broken but I am the one I’ve always been and I don’t see why we are growing away from each other

    II – Translate into French
Father : the magistrate, into whose courtroom I would sometimes slip during a trial, to crouch in a back seat, trying to relate to the stranger up there on the high bench, in his ample black gown, remote and stern, dispensing justice. However strange he seemed, I was proud, immensely proud. This is my father. I wanted everyone to know this man who can listen to all these people and then decide, just like that, what is right, what wrong. He knows.

Voilà...Abacus far too clever for me...And since you ask, I love both translations (even a bit longer 'in French) and welcome to easy games...

    Message : Exercise 81
    Bonsoir Chère here4u,
Voici mon travail, prêt pour être corrigé.
    hello Joe! OK,
I'll post your exercise for you as soon as I'm sure of my Internet... I'll correct it in the meantime...

    I. Translate into English:
    1. Pourquoi insister ? Tu peux, et tu dois me croire ! Un point c'est tout !

What kind of influence has he on you? You are so obedient and submissive as one might think he makes you sing ...his own song/from the same hymn sheet.
She must be so involved, that she doesn't see no way out from this nasty dilemma which, in the end, is going to spoil her.
As soon as she knew the horrible news, she promised she would have given her help. But then she changed her mind completely.
It is said that the promises are made to be betrayed, but I'm
the one who has always kept a promise and now I can't see the reason we are moving away from each other/ of this major shift in our attitudes.

III) ABACUS: Slide the abacus beads (letters) along the wires (lines) to form 11 related words (belonging to the same theme), reading down. (The beads are on wires, and CANNOT jump over one another!)
Work well! You'll quickly realize this is no game!
If you find it too difficult, after 2 or 3 days, I'll give you the number of letters of the 11 words... but I'd rather not!

    1. -------S---------C----------R-------A----------D-----
    2. -------T---T- ----- ---L------E-----------U----I------
    3. --C-- -A------ --U --- ---- --H--- -C-----N---------------
    4. -------G- H- ---R-------- ---E-----T-----D----R------- Sur mon "brouillon",les mots sont parfaitement lisibles !
    5. --U----E-- E---- ------ -- ---A-----------E----E------ GRRRR! I hate the "Machine" ...
    6. --- ---F---W-----T-------- ---R-----O-----R----C-------
    7 --E--- R---I---------- --- ---S -- -R-----S----T------
    8. -------I------ --A-----I--- --A-----S-----T----------
    9. ----- G---N---- I--- -N------L-----------U-----------
    10. --- -H---G---- N-----E------------------D----O-------
    11. ---- T---S--------- -S----------- ------Y----R-------

CERTIFIED WITHOUT ANY MISTAKES; (You mustn't add any letters, or leave any out!)
In order to avoid misunderstanding the words I have found are:
Cue, stage, fright, the wings (2), curtain, lines, rehearsal, actors, understudy, director.
Indeed I'm doubtful about ?the wings?.
I thank you very much for this very nice exercise, though the Abacus left me a little bit worn out.

    So long, my dear mentor.

No hard feelings, I hope!

    hello !

No pb, Choco !

Thank you for this new exercise !

    1. Why are you insisting ? If I'm telling you that I won't buy you this violent toy, I never will ! You can and you must believe me ! Full stop !
    2. What kind of hold does he have on you ? You are so obedient and submissive that it looks like he blackmails you.

    4. Until she heard about the terrible news, she had been promising to help him(her). But since then, she has changed completely.
5.Promises are said to be betrayed but I'm still the same one as I've always been and I don't understand why we are drifting apart just now.

    2. En français
“Father: the magistrate, into whose courtroom I would sometimes slip during a trial, to crouch in a back seat, trying to relate to the stranger up there on the high bench, in his ample black gown, remote and stern, dispensing justice. However strange he seemed, I was proud, immensely proud. Hello Dear Friends!

Thanks for your very good work and for your feedback... OK! Your message is received and understood... You don't want abascus, which apparently you consider as a torture... Yet, I like it and I won't give up... I know it's good for you... but I promise they'll be less difficult.

1.Pourquoi insister ? Tu peux, et tu dois me croire ! Un point c'est tout !

Why insist? If I tell you I won’t buy that violent toy for you, I will never! You can and you must believe me! End of the story!

    - Why insist? = why + infinitif sans to. / Why must you insist?/ Why do you have to insist? « Why are you insisting…? »)
    - End of the story! /That’s it! / Period!/ Full stop! / End of discussion!/ “And that’s final!”

What kind of a hold does he have on you? You’re so obedient and submissive that we could/might think he’s blackmailing you.

    - to have a hold on someone/ have power over someone / a grip on /a sway on / a stranglehold on/ an influence on
    - we could think he is / you look as if he were …(ici, on insiste sur l’irréel de la situation)
    - to obey your parents (pas de préposition)/ to disobey someone /obedient/ disobedient
    - faire chanter = faire du chantage = to blackmail.

She must be so implicated/involved that she can see no solution to that dilemma and that finally, it’s destroying her.

    - implied/implicated/involved so much/to such an extent/

im•pli•cate (mpl-kt) tr.v. im•pli•cat•ed, im•pli•cat•ing, im•pli•cates 1. To involve or connect intimately or incriminatingly: evidence that implicates others in the plot. 2. To have as a consequence or necessary circumstance; imply or entail: His evasiveness implicated complicity.
you imply something, it usually means you convey meaning without literally stating it.
For a difference between “imply” and “implicate” see : Lien internet

    Lien internet

=>In general, 'imply' carries the notion of 'to indicate', and 'implicate' carries the notion of 'to involve'.
    - to find a solution to a problem/ an issue
    - finally/ in the end/ eventually (= Faux-ami)/
    - destroy/ demolish/knock down /tear down/ ne pas oublier l’aspect action en progression => ing)

    4. Jusqu'à ce qu'elle connaisse l'horrible nouvelle, elle promettait de l'aider. Mais depuis, elle a changé du tout au tout.

Till/Until she heard of the terrible piece of news, she had promised to help her/him. Since then, she has changed totally!

    - Ici le repère est passé, l’action révolue => prétérit => until she heard of…
    - une horrible nouvelle = a horrible/terrible piece of news ; « news » est indénombrable singulier : "the news is good!" = Les nouvelles sont bonnes ; "here’s the News!" Voici les nouvelles ! ; "What’s (= is) the news?" = Quelles sont les nouvelles ? Pour mettre au singulier => a piece of … (news/ information/luggage …)
    - « depuis ce moment là » = depuis un moment précis = « since then ».
    Lien internet

    Lien internet

    Lien internet

= change totally and very fast.

Promises are said to be made to be broken but I’m the one I’ve always been and I can’t understand why we are growing apart at the moment…

    - “les promesses” = « les promesses » en général, pas de promesses en particulier, donc, pas de déterminant défini mais un indéfini pluriel (= 0= « promises »)
    - « on dit que les promesses » = « ON » = dring !!! Petite cloche qui sonne dans votre cerveau …. => = PASSIF. Le moyen terme était de faire un passif avec « said » = « It is said that promises… ». « L’idéal » était de prendre vraiment le COD en sujet => « Promises are said to be ».
    - « être fait pour » = to be made to do something
    - J’ai toujours été = bilan => “I’ve always been”
    - S’éloigner = to draw away/ to pull away/ to move away/grow away from/ tout ceci allait bien. Pour insister sur l’idée de séparation (et non plus seulement de distance) j’ai préféré « grew apart » = d’abord « se perdre de vue », puis vraiment « s’éloigner l’un de l’autre ».

    II.Translate into French:

“Father: the magistrate, into whose courtroom
I would sometimes slip during a trial, to crouch in a back seat, trying to relate to the stranger up there on the high bench, in his ample black gown, remote and stern, dispensing justice. However strange he seemed, I was proud, immensely proud. This is my father, I wanted everyone to know, this man who can listen to all these people and then decide, just like that, what is right, what wrong. He knows. »

    (Sables imaginaires)

    (1) « Father : the magistrate …
    (2) « to relate to » ATTENTION !
Cf. « Divine Justice »)

    III) ABACUS:

    1. -------S-------C---------R---A----------D-----
    2. -------T---T--------L----E---------U----I----
    3. --C----A-------U---------H---C-----N----------
    4. -------G---H---R---------E---T-----D----R----
    5. --U----E---E-------------A---------E----E-------

    7. --E----R---I-------------S---R-----S----T------
    8. -------I-------A----I----A---S-----T------------
    9. ------G---N---I----N----L---------U---------
    10. ------H---G---N----E--------------D----O-------
    11. ------T---S--------S--------------Y----R-------

Cue= (a hint, a signal) = un signal ; The band stood in formation, waiting patiently for the cue to march.
    Stagefright= le trac
    The wings= les coulisses
    Curtain= le rideau
    Lines= le texte
    Rehearsal= une répétition
    Actors = les acteurs
Understudy (for somebody)= la doublure de
    Director= metteur en scène
(Limelight! Lucky you… I forgot this one!)

You're GREAT!

    Please, excuse any possible typo...
