Stressed syllables are perceived as more prominent than other syllables due to a combination of one or more of the following: loudness, pitch and length. They place emphasis on a sound.
English distinguishes between stressed and unstressed syllables. As you may have noticed already, stressed syllables are marked by the ' mark placed before the syllable which has been stressed. Unstressed syllables are left unmarked.
The word insight is usually pronounced /'insait/
Whereas incite is usually pronounced /in'sait/
(etc!)
Exercise
Try saying insight and incite several times until you are able to grasp the difference between stressed and unstressed syllables.
