-I'm going to talk about the idea of progress, First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change which contributes to making the world a better place in terms of science, technology, modernization and quality of life.
-This year in class we studied several documents about this notion and in particulary science, and social progress.
-First, in order to illustrate the scientific progress I have choosen 3 documents.
The first document is about an handicaped athletic Oscar Pistorious, is hadicaped because he was born without fibula which is a bone constituting the lateral part of the leg skeleton then his legs were cat. He beneficied of the medical progress because at the age of 2 years, he learns to walk with carbon fiber prothesis, because for doctors carbon is the material most lightest and rigid at the same time. His prothesis will allow him to participate to the olympic games where he win a gold medal. Thus we can say that Oscar Pistorius is a brilliant athlete today because of evolution in medecine.

The second document compound 2 texts about ''Desingning your baby'', The first texte talk about Pre-implantation genetic diseas ''PGD'', which is a technique used by parents who not only want to make sure their child will not suffer from a severe disease, but also to ask for select certain physical characteristics like green eyes or fair hair. It represents a scientific breakthrough, which is revolutionary in so far as it can help eradicate certain diseases. Nevertheless, it can also be seen as scandalous since it raises the issue of people being used as scientific objects and goes against diversity. It may lead to the creation of an ideal being, thus undoubtedly forming rejected, weak beings who fail to conform with what is expected of them.
The second text is about the Molly's story . Molly is a teenager who was born with a rare illness from which she was destined to die before the age of 7. She was cured in 2000 thanks to a bone marrow transplant from her brother Adam who was a medecine baby it mean Adam was born to save his sister. Her story is significant because she was the first child to be cured thanks to PGD. It showed that such an innovative scientific breakthrough can improve life expectancy and have outstanding results when it comes to healing severe diseases.
All the articles illustrate the notion of progress in so far as they present us with a scientific breakthrough.
Indeed, prothesis is a good processus which give a second chance to people with disabilities and not to feel inferior to others. Also PGD is an unparalleled technique, which can cure severe illnesses and prolong the life of weaker beings. It is also considered progress since it enables parents to choose the physical characteristics of their future baby and to produce babies who are expected to conform to their parents’ wishes. However, even if designer babies are a scientific achievement, they also jeopardize diversity and open the door to the idea that some people who could be under-achieving are to be rejected and seen as outcasts. So it is necessary to think it over and be aware of the risks so that governments and scientists can draw a clear line between what is ethically acceptable or not.

In a second stage, I'm going to talk about social progress, for this part we have juste study one document during an evaluation but I think that it's enough to illustrate social evolution.
The document is a poster, on top is Rosa parks, below B.Obama and at the middle he's Martin Luther king. This document illustrate the idea of social progress because this 3 persons participated in the evolution of relations between black and white, Rosa and Martin were against the racial segregation, mostly Martin Luther king who was an afro-american leader , he doesn't use violence in his fight, he was pacific , against pauverty and the separation of people according to their skin colour. (parler du discours ''I have a dream''). Also we can say that Rosa Parks is the starting point of the big movement which fought against segregation in the United States of America, so she marked the begining of the fight which evolved.
For the first time in United States history, the elected president is black. This is a radical progress and a consecration for the American Black Community. Those 50-years fighting for equality were not useless. Barack Obama came to power in a state which denied decades ago people of his skin color. Martin Luther King was Barack Obama's model. This election was very symbolic. A symbol which means that segregation was over. And 45 years after Martin luther king's speech, dream came true, and the progress it reched its peak.
To conclude, every day we try to change the world, we try to fight inequalities. Every day we try to make our world a better place. Thanks to people like Martin Luther King and his fight against racial discrimination, or people like scientifics and their fights against illness, things change. Every day we make a real progress.
We can also relate these articles to the notion of Myths and Heroes. Indeed Rosa Parks and ML King are considered as heroes to many people: Before the Civil Rights Movement, when whites were thought to be better than all other races, they decided it was time for change.
