    Hello.
Please help me fill the blank.
    Sometimes we play follow-the-leader.
Sue likes to be ___ leader and Sam does not.
    1.a
    2.the
    3./
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    Which article do you suggest?

I would leave it the way it is, blank, but only because it sounds most natural.

    Hello
Normally, you use an article when you give your job.
    What's your job ?
I am a teacher, an electrician.

Here, as the game is quoted and defined, I would use the, meaning the leader in this game.
    Sometimes we play follow-the-leader.
Sue likes to be the leader and Sam does not./whereas Sam doesn't.

    Hello,
I agree with gerondif; you have to use 'the'.
