The narrator uses a distant and impersonal tone to speak about the Tomkeys as if they were puppets and seems to be a spectator who attends a show. We find “owned by a man named Mr Tomkey”, “the view was better”, “I saw”, “a camera”, “attractive”, “uninteresting”… and the quotation the most significant “I felt as if my favourite show had been cancelled”. He describes accurately their gestures as if he was the spectator able(s?) to have a sight in all surroundings.
According to what we have answered the previous question, we can say that the title « Us and them » is appropriate. This title shows the bound between the narrator spectator and the Tomkeys actors. However, using that title is scornful: the Tomkeys are human beings like the narrator and are the narrator’neighbors. We can suggest an alternative title, for example “My strange neighbors”.
