The progress is a medical, social or technological evolution, which contributes to ameliorate human beings conditions and the world where he lives. However, the idea of progress shakes up traditions and custom, and therefore worries some people about theirs possible consequences. The scientific progress is a handsome example to
The theme of the Scientific Progress can illustrate the notion of The idea of Progress. The Scientific Progress is part of our everyday life and especially of tomorrow. Indeed, scientific progress will change our way of life for better or for the worse… So Is the scientist progress always beneficial?
We will see, firstly the advantages and lastly the disadvantages of the scientist progress through the examples of the designer babies; plastic surgery and genetic engineering process.
I – The advantages of the scientist progress
Designer Babies is a scientist program, better known as the PGD (Pre implantation Genetic Diagnosis). This program was invented to screen out diseases and also for gender selection. Jeffroy Steinberg is a pioneer in vitro fertilization. He believes that technologies should be made available for his patients. Indeed, stem cell research opens the way for treatment for diseases such as diabetes, sida, Parkinson’s or physical disability. It is an opportunity for the couples who have a genetic disease. It could allow them to have normal babies.
Plastic surgery allows offering a better life to her patients too. An accident or a birth defect can unfortunately deform the face and the body. Plastic Surgery is also really a chance to try to find his past physical appearance, because we live in a world whose the credo is perfection. Plastic surgery is the only one chance for the victims to be reintegrated in our society.
Finally, genetic engineering is no more science fiction but a science fact. It is an umbrella term, which refers to the ability to select desirable genetic information while screening out others. This artificial selection has the power to enhance specific characteristics for mankind’s benefit. Indeed, genetic engineering enables scientists to develop animals and plants to suit their needs.
This three examples show that scientist progress is above all an opportunity for people to ameliorate their life’s condition and their relationship with the world, when necessary.
II – The disadvantages of the scientist progress
However, the scientist progress is a subject, which divides and splits opinion across the world. It can rapidly become a means to satisfy people’s personal desires and no longer people’s needs.
Most Americans are in favor of PGD when it’s used to prevent diseases. The other part is against it because it’s not ethical. As genetic engineering, PGD is in opposition with the natural selection. An embryo, no matter how small, is a life that must be respected. For some, tinkering with human embryos leaves the door wide open to all sorts of abuses. It contributes to the development of the eugenics practice, with terrible repercussions such as in the film Gattaca.
Some people have a natural desire for perfection: they think that their body is incomplete so they modified it. There are different ways to access to the perfection as plastic surgery or miracle pills. This recourse to cosmetic surgery is continuing to increase worldwide. Many American girls have their first plastic surgery for their 18 th birthday. This fact is no more incredible, but it’s the sign of the rise of a new kind of society: superficial and based on the physical appearance.
In a word, these scientist processes are expensive technology that only the rich would be able to afford. This would lead to an increase of the inequalities in the world and raises the questions of “who is to decide what the best traits are?” etc…
Conclusion: The scientist progress is at the heart of our society. It’s not the scientist progress within him, which raise problem, but the way to use it. If they make good use of this opportunity, they can achieve the right results and obtain benefit for the entire mankind. If not, scientist progress can become an instrument for selfish men, and cause harmful consequences on human beings.
